Dowlish Wake History & Heritage project

Dowlish Wake and the adjoining area is steeped in history. The village is close to the Fosse Way and there are several sites of archaeological & historical interest nearby.

The aim of the project is to -

  • to explore and record the history of its people, places, buildings and landscapes together with the origins and development of its community over time.

  • to encourage villagers past and present to share photographs, memories, documents and any information that might be valued in a historical or heritage sense.

  • to promote a continued community interest in our cottages, buildings, monuments and artifacts both as they exist now and those lost or demolished over the years. So by such research we can protect, nurture and generally appreciate its heritage.

  • to discover more about both the well-known people such as John Hanning Speke as well as other past residents who we may be considered more ordinary but are still just as interesting.

So whatever you may be interested in - your home, local history or village family history, we hope you enjoy the content that will be produced over the coming months.
